Young Reporter Award for Year 12’s Kai
Budding journalist and photographer Kai has been announced as one of the winners of the 2024 Young Reporter Scheme, a competition that attracts hundreds of entries from pupils across the UK.
Kai has been announced as a winner in the Year 12/13 category, following his submission of eight articles and accompanying original photography. The Young Reporter Scheme is run in partnership with Newsquest Media Group and is open to pupils from years 10-13, providing an opportunity to write for live online newspapers. Submissions are invited in several categories, including Breaking News, Interviews, Sport, and Photograph.
The Awards ceremony will be held later this summer, where Kai will find out the specific award he has won. In the meantime, as a winner he has been invited to an undergraduate day at a London University and his achievement has been recognised with a certificate presented at a Sixth Form assembly by Mr Drury, Colfe’s Director of Sixth Form.
Kai’s articles cover a variety of subjects, including the brutalist architecture of London’s Barbican centre, the role of the young generation in tackling climate change, a review of a new book on Fake Law and an analysis of the impact of AI on society. Each of his news stories was accompanied by his own photography.
Kai said: “I’m studying Photography and Media Studies along with Politics and Business for A-level, and I’m interested in pursuing the field of journalism in some form, perhaps through writing, photography or graphic design, so I was very keen to enter this competition. I especially enjoyed researching each of the articles, it was very interesting studying the different topics in detail and applying that knowledge in a creative way, and though the deadlines meant a little bit of pressure, this motivated me to focus even more.”
