In the school’s first ever entry to the #700 STEM Challenge essay competition, Year 9’s Freddie has scooped 1st prize in the KS3 category with his essay on Wormholes.
Combining STEM topics with creative writing, the #700 STEM Challenge competition was created in 2018 by a student at Sydenham High School GDST, which has hosted the event ever since. The challenge is to condense knowledge of a chosen science, technology, engineering or maths topic into just 700 words. Entries are received from many high performing independent and grammar schools across London, providing tough competition. Freddie’s entry was selected from hundreds of submissions, beating off competition from 200 semi-finalists to reach the final, with the results announced at an Awards ceremony. Colfe’s entrants also included Melis (Y7) and Abigail (Y11), both of whom impressed despite not reaching the final.
Teacher of Chemistry and Academic Enrichment Co-ordinator Reema Hooks said: “Congratulations to Freddie, Melis, and Abigail for their outstanding entries in the STEM Challenge Essay Competition. Freddie’s essay on wormholes triumphed over hundreds of submissions to secure first place. We are delighted that our first year of entering this competition not only inspired our pupils, but that one of them went on to win 1st prize.”
