Colfe’s is delighted to announce that Year 11’s Michaela has been awarded a Commendation from the John Locke Institute for her submission to the 2024 Global Essay Prize.

Michaela was shortlisted for the Politics prize for her essay on the topic Is there such a thing as too much democracy?. Her treatise explored the history and impact of democracies on societies, from ancient Greece to the current day, how truly representative are democracies, the alternatives to democratic rule, the positive or negative effects of referendums, and the deeper implications for societal cohesion.

The John Locke Institute’s Global Essay Prize is seen as the world’s most prestigious essay competition, and attracts tens of thousands of submissions from entrants from more than 150 countries. Essays are judged on knowledge and understanding of the relevant material, the competent use of evidence, quality of argumentation, originality, structure, writing style and persuasive force.

Michaela said, “I was inspired to enter the competition after reading about it on the website and finding the questions really interesting. I chose the specific Politics topic as it was a subject I didn’t know about, and wanted to expand my knowledge by researching something new. I’m definitely considering studying Politics at A-level now.”

Enrichment Co-ordinator and Teacher of English Tim Cook said, “This is an excellent achievement by Michaela. The John Locke Institute Essay Prize is the largest and among the most celebrated academic competitions in the world, and to be amongst the small number of shortlisted entrants is a significant attainment. Well done Michaela!”.
