Community & Partnerships

As a local school, Colfe’s attaches great importance to widening participation and playing a full part in the life of its community.

Abraham Colfe, our Founder, was Vicar of St Mary’s Church in Lewisham during the period of the English Civil War and we still attach great value to our historic links with the Borough of Lewisham, as well as with Greenwich.

Colfe’s governors, a majority of whom represent the Leathersellers’ Company, welcome the closer interest which the Charity Commission has shown in the activities of independent schools. So how does Colfe’s make a difference through education?

We provide financial aid for bright pupils whose families would struggle to meet our fees, especially those pupils who qualify for free school meals:

  • Academic merit-based and means-tested scholarships are available at the point of entry to the Senior School (11+) and the Sixth Form (16+).
  • Leathersellers’ Scholarships (fully-funded Sixth Form places). Up to 12 scholarships are awarded each year, supported by annual funding of approximately £275,000 from the Leathersellers’ City Livery Company. Past scholars have gained university places at Cambridge, UCL, Nottingham and Bristol, among others. We give priority to pupils in local comprehensive schools.

We support the boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich in its drive to improve state education locally by working closely with a number of local state schools:

  • Colfe’s teachers of Modern Languages run workshops for teachers and Year 10/11 pupils
  • Colfe’s Science and Maths teachers run master classes for Year 10/11 pupils
  • Colfe’s Classics teachers teach Latin to Year 10/11 pupils in weekly classes
  • Pupils from partner school are invited to taster sessions and workshops in a variety of different subjects
  • An annual trip to either Oxford University or Cambridge University for Year 10 pupils from Colfe’s and partner schools
  • The Colfe’s Careers Fair where Year 11 partner schools are welcome to join our Year 11/12 pupils
  • Art workshops involving Colfe’s Year 13 artists discussing their work with Year 10 pupils from partner schools
  • Invitations to attend talks and societies – such as the John Glyn Society featuring leading speakers – and to concerts and recitals
  • The opportunity to join Colfe’s debating team at competitions and participate in Colfe’s orchestra
  • Joint in-service training with partner schools, in subjects including Art and Modern Languages

Partnership Schools
Colfe’s works in partnership with a number of local state schools offering a range of activities for students and teachers.

GCSE students are invited to attend specially run, after-school classes in subjects such as Latin, Science, Maths, Debating and Modern Languages. The programme gives students the opportunity to study a new subject or to enrich the study of their own curriculum subjects and many who attend these sessions go on to apply for Leathersellers’ Scholarships for their A-level studies.
