UK Reading Quiz Champions for Second Year
A cracking team of readers from Years 7, 8 and 9 have triumphed at the grand Final of the National Reading Champions Quiz, run by the Literacy Trust, winning the competition for the second year running with a final score that was four points clear at the top of the table.
The team, comprising Natalie (Year 9), Leila (Year 8), Verity (Year 8) and Reuben (Year 7), with Imy (Year 8) as reserve, saw off competition from over 500 schools across the UK to take home the trophy.
Librarian Henrietta Englefield said: “We are super-proud of this achievement. Before the pandemic we came second and third in the Kids’ Lit Quiz, so we have now come in the top three for a UK children’s book quiz five years in a row. Such great results reflect the joint commitment of the Library and the English department to reading, and the enthusiasm of our students – plus some luck! It was so lovely for our team to be in a room full of like-minded kids, and they were excited to see authors including Jasminder Bilan, Anthony McGowan, Benjamin Dean and Jennifer Killick in the flesh.
“Colfe’s has a huge emphasis on reading in Years 7, 8 and 9. All the students in Key Stage 3 have fortnightly Library lessons to promote reading for pleasure and are lucky to have a well-stocked Library. The kids who were in the teams read anyway, but we put a lot of emphasis on matching reluctant readers with books they will enjoy, which we believe will benefit the students both academically and in their wider lives. ”
The National Reading Champions Quiz, now in its third year, is aimed at promoting reading enjoyment, encouraging diverse reading, and improving reading stamina. The quiz covers a wide range of questions based on fictional titles, involving book titles, characters, authors, brain teasers and story details. Multiple genres of fiction are featured, drawn from today’s breadth and variety of children’s publishing as well as well-known books and authors.
