Triumph at House Music
The hotly anticipated House Music Competition played out to a capacity crowd in the Main Hall this week, with the four Houses battling in a keenly fought contest.
All four Houses produced fantastic performances, with pupils across the year groups collaborating to perform ensemble numbers including a Beatles medley, Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now, and Walk the Moon’s Shut Up and Dance. The audience was also treated to some outstanding soloist performances, with beautiful violin and oboe pieces from Oskar (Year 11), Preston and Jojo (both Year 7).
There can only be one winner though, and Beardwood House ended up sweeping the board as winners of both individual and ensemble categories. After a haunting vocal performance of Celeste’s Strange from Edie in Year 7, Beardwood’s showstopping rendition of Tim Minchin’s Revolting Children clinched the ensemble prize and with it the overall winners’ trophy.
The evening was capped with a very entertaining performance of Human League’s Together in Electric Dreams from staff band ColfePlay.
The competition was adjudicated by composer and percussionist Hugh Wilkinson, whose portfolio includes composition for film, television, video games and theatre, performing with such artists as Quincy Jones and Marc Almond, as well as theatrical performances including the world tour of Sam Mendes’ production of Richard III.
Tim Newberry, Director of Music, said: “This year’s competition saw some quite brilliant performances, both in the solo and ensemble categories. Well done to every single performer. It was an extremely close call, but congratulations to Beardwood House for the clean sweep.”
