Colfe’s was delighted to welcome author, travel writer and filmmaker Simon Parker to present the latest in the John Glyn Society Lecture series.

Simon describes his life as a pursuit of storytelling: “If it involves travel, intriguing people and an untold story, then I’m interested.” He has reported from over 100 countries, and interviewed politicians, celebrities and sports stars.

Year 8’s Louise gave the following review:

This term’s lecture was delivered by award-winning travel writer Simon Parker. He recounted his journey around Britain, narrating his experiences and describing the challenges he faced. His exciting accounts of his expeditions kept students invested in his stories, especially the aspiring journalists and thrill-seekers present. Simon regaled us with his adventures and told us about his successful book featuring his cycle around Britain’s outskirts. Some of his more memorable trips include his incredible travels from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico- an inspiring 10 week, 10mph journey where he cycled 4,000 miles. He briefly touched on this, but during the lecture, we mainly focused on his equally fascinating cycle around Britain, which started and ended at Muckle Flugga Lighthouse. We also learned about the dozens of accommodating people he had met during his travels and that journalism had been his passion ever since he was young. He cycled an impressive 3,427 miles in approximately eight months.

Overall, the lecture was an educative experience that inspired many people and created a lasting impression on everyone involved.
