Sporting Success this Spring
The Spring term has seen a swathe of sporting successes for senior and junior pupils in a range of fields.
Year 10’s Olly has been selected to compete in the English School Cross Country Championships. Run by the English Schools’ Athletic Association, the championships are eagerly anticipated by young athletes, bringing the best athletes in each county in England to compete for the honour of being the best in the country.
Aquatics has seen a series of impressive achievements. Waterpolo goes from strength to strength, with Jakab (Year 12) currently training as part of the GB U19 squad, and both the U18 and U16 boys teams qualifying for the league final. The U18 girls team agonisingly missed out on a place at the National Waterpolo finals by just one goal; they will now play for the plate alongside the U15 girls teams.
The Kent Championships at the Lee Valley Olympic swimming pool was the scene for many of our swimmers from Year 5 right up to Year 12 competing, medalling and achieving Personal Bests.
In Netball, the Senior girls teams enjoyed several emphatic wins in inter-school fixtures, whilst Year 7 netballers played some superb games at the county tournament.
Star fencer Thea, Year 9, continues to shine, completing an undefeated streak to win U14 gold at the Southern Championships. This was followed by another triumph winning gold at the Leon Paul Junior Series, where she gave a dominant display against opponents two years her senior from other independent schools to bring home an impressive cup which bears Colfe’s name inscribed alongside hers.
Junior pupils have enjoyed an equally energetic and competitive few weeks of sport. In football, the U8 boys’ and girls’ teams competed in a tough tournament against seven rival independent schools, with the girls finishing an impressive second, and the boys third.
The mixed-side junior hockey players did the school proud against robust opposition at the recent U10 London Regional festival, with one team bringing home bronze medals, and the other winning one and drawing three matches.
Director of Sport Nicci Rayes said, “We have been delighted to see such strong performances in team sports this term. Both boys and girls’ teams have shown ambition, resilience and excellent teamwork in football, netball and hockey in both senior and junior tournaments. We have also seen some outstanding achievements from Olly, Jakab and Thea in their individual sports, and we wish them much success in their next steps.
“I am extremely proud of our swimmers and waterpolo competitors, who are really seeing the fruits of their labour and commitment. The numbers of pupils attending waterpolo club from Years 5-8 is at an unprecedented level. Thank you to our superb aquatics coaching team for all their hard work – it is definitely paying off!”
