The aim of the Mathematics Department at Colfe’s School is to enable every pupil to achieve his or her full potential, whether it be passing IGCSE Mathematics or winning a place at Cambridge. In tandem with this we strive to engage our students in their learning and encourage them to be inquisitive about the subject. We hope to do this by:

  • Carefully tailoring lessons to pupils’ needs, ensuring that challenging concepts are carefully explained and that students have opportunities to resolve their misconceptions.
  • Regular communication with parents via detailed analyses of exam performance and clinic attendance reports, relative to both class and cohort.
  • Conveying some of the inherent fascination and power of the subject, via links to real world scenarios.
  • Providing voluntary extra-curriculum support in the form of many weekly sessions where pupils may gain assistance.
  • Ensuring that pupils have 24/7 access to a vast (over 30,000 files) and evolving collection of worksheets, quizzes, videos and other fabulous resources, including much enrichment, hosted on our intranet.
Years 7-11

All pupils follow the same course at the start of Year 7 and are placed in sets from January. Every pupil is taught the whole syllabus, with higher ability classes looking more deeply into certain topics. The level of work is based on, but consistently beyond, the national curriculum expectations.

In Key Stage 4 students complete IGCSE Mathematics with students sitting the higher tier examination. In 2023, 43% achieved a grade 9 and 83% achieved 9-7 grades. The top set also study Level 2 Further Mathematics, sitting both qualifications at the end of Year 11 and 71% of students achieved a grade 9 and 100% achieved at least a grade 8 in this qualification.

We also involve students in a broad range of mathematical activities beyond the classroom including the UKMT Maths Challenges and the Hans Woyda competition.

Sixth Form

Our Sixth Form work focuses on A-levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. In 2023 56% of A-level students achieved an A* and 83% gained grades A*/A. In addition, 73% of Further Mathematics students achieved an A* grade and 100% achieved A*/A. Results over the last three examinable years have propelled the department to the top 10% of all independent schools for value added at A-level.
