Live productions back with Into The Woods

Last month saw the very welcome return of live audiences to the Beardwood Theatre to see the Year 7-10 production of Into The Woods. The classic Stephen Sondheim musical, abridged to a junior version, was brought to life by a talented and energetic cast who brought the show from page to stage with passion, hard work and bundles of enthusiasm.

The show marked the first time a full external audience had been in the theatre since pre-pandemic, and the excitement of performing to a packed auditorium of parents was palpable, with the audience reception equally animated.

The Tony-award winning musical Into The Woods premiered in 1987, and has since been produced multiple times on Broadway and the West End, with an Oscar-nominated Disney film adaptation released in 2014. Written by James Lapine with music and lyrics by Sondheim, it intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters’ quests.

Natalie Maher, Director of Drama, said “It has been a pure delight to bring a full production back to the Beardwood Theatre, and an absolute joy to work with such a hard-working group of talented students both on and off the stage. We are so proud of the commitment, dedication and resilience of the students, and of the whole team. Huge thanks to everyone, from the fantastic technical team to our visionary directors, the wonderful music department, the creative costume and props team from the Sixth Form, caretakers, site team, caterers and front of house helpers.”

The students too are rightly proud of their achievements:

“Being a part of the creative team of the production has taught me so much about patience, communication and teamwork. I have had such a fulfilling time helping. This experience has not only been very joyful and fun, but it has also inspired me for my future and what it possibly might hold for me from the wings.” Rosie, Student Assistant Director

“Working on the Into the Woods production has been so exciting. It feels so professional, and the atmosphere is great because everyone is working to their maximum creative abilities to create something amazing when put together.” Amelia Y9 (Cinderella)

“Starting with the audition, I loved the experience! I loved the whole thing, getting to know my character better throughout the course, and becoming closer friends with the other cast members. The teachers (and Rosie) were all super encouraging and helpful and I think that the play went really well on both nights! I’m really proud of what we achieved.” Maria Y9 (Baker’s Wife)

“Working as part of the creative team for the production of Into the Woods was such an amazing opportunity for me as it meant I could enhance and display my skills in a similar environment to what I want to work in. After a long time of not being able to produce a school production it was enjoyable to watch the rehearsal process and quite moving to watch the show with a full audience once again.” Sonny (Head of Hair and Make-up)
