Award-winning readers at Colfe’s

Colfe’s students have brought home the coveted CWISL CWIZZ book quiz trophy for the second year running, after a close competition at Dulwich College. It was a great afternoon for Colfe’s as our three teams of students were placed first, third and fourth in a closely fought competition.

The students representing Colfe’s were Isaac, Nico, Katie and Paloma (1st); Samson, Polly, Holly and Xanthe (3rd) and Joshua, Ned, Leif and Mirja (4th). Our reserve Alexandra also joined a team from another school. Practice over the Easter break and at the start of term meant that the teams were well equipped to deal with rounds of questions on topics from siblings in literature to myths, fairy tales and fantasy. The students also enjoyed readings from newly published books and came away with some additional prizes for quick-fire questions open to all the competitors as individuals.

Success in book quizzes relies on pupils reading widely for pleasure and absorbing what they read. It has been exciting to have so many enthusiastic to take part in such competitions. At Colfe’s, every student in Years 7, 8 and 9 has a fortnightly Library lesson to promote a love of books and to ensure that the pupils engage in sustained reading. The English Department and Library have been delighted to see book loans growing steadily over the last few years, and the school’s outstanding performance in book quizzes this year suggests that reading is alive and well at Colfe’s.
