Author Margaret Bateson-Hill shares her creative writing advice with Year 7

Margaret Bateson-Hill is the latest author to visit Colfe’s to talk to Year 7 pupils about the art of creative writing for children.

Margaret, who writes the popular Dragon Racer series, gave a fascinating insight into what inspires her story telling during an illustrated talk for the whole year, which was followed by an interactive workshop with 20 pupils. During the session pupils were asked to formulate their very own tales, calling on all their senses to aid their descriptive writing.

Margaret said about her visit “I really enjoyed coming to Colfe’s and saw a great environment of reading and writing. I threw pupils in at deep end by asking them to write something straight away but was very impressed at how individual personalities came through. I like to encourage everyone to find their own voice and there were some brave writers in the group.”

Year 7 pupil Maisie said “It was very interesting to learn about Margaret’s life and how she writes her stories,” while Alex also commented “I really enjoyed hearing snippets of her stories and it’s really exciting to know that we were some of the first people to hear a bit of her new story.”
