Junior School Pupils Inaugurate New Book Vending Machine

The beginning of term saw the launch of the Junior School’s vending machine – which gives out books instead of snacks!

The opening of the vending machine follows the Summer Reading Pentathlon, where pupils were encouraged to read a newspaper article, comic, novel, poem and non-fiction book. Two pupils were then chosen in a raffle to receive a prize book from the vending machine.

Laurie, Year 3, said, “I was shocked and excited that I was chosen. I think it’s a good idea because having books as a reward makes them more exciting”.

Year 5’s Amaya agreed and chose a book about otters from the machine, saying, “I use the school library a lot and the pentathlon encouraged me to read books I wouldn’t normally choose – I read a newspaper article on the Olympics.”  The vending machine is one of many initiatives in the Junior School designed to foster a love of reading among pupils.

Head of Junior School Marie-Clare Gilfedder-Bonnar emphasises that “reading is always a priority and has numerous benefits for learning, creativity and empathy. We are always looking for new ways to encourage engagement with books: our library is very popular with the pupils and I am proud of the huge number of pupils who took part in the Summer Reading Pentathlon.”

Colfe’s is lucky enough to have a Junior and Senior School library, from which all pupils can access and borrow books. Book challenges like the Summer Reading Pentathlon and the Year 7 Reading Around the World competition are brilliant at sparking conversation about books and introducing pupils to a love of reading.
