John Glyn Society Lecture: The Science of Making Medicines
Students from Years 11, 12 and 13, including the many aspiring medics in our senior school, were treated to a fascinating insight into the science of making medicines from leading UK pharmacist Dr Bahijja Raimi-Abraham at the latest John Glyn Society Lecture.
Multi-award winning Dr Raimi-Abraham is Lecturer in Pharmaceutics at King’s College, London, and leads the Raimi-Abraham Research group focusing on solving pharmaceutical challenges in infectious diseases with a particular interest in malaria, tuberculosis, and latent and asymptomatic infections.
Dr Raimi-Abraham is the founder and host of Monday Science (selected in the top 25 Best UK Science Podcast by Feedspot), a weekly podcast that discusses the latest in Science, Health and Technology. She is also the founder of KCL’s Fight the Fakes campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the dangers of fake medicines and the negative global impact of the counterfeit medicine industry.
Year 13 student Hannah reviewed the talk:
“Pharmacist Dr Bahijja Raimi-Abraham gave a really accessible and engaging talk informing Colfe’s on the journey of our everyday medicines from the lab to our homes, which her pharmaceutical research and PhD makes possible. She also shone a light on the current dangers of ‘fake’ medicines on the market and how ordinary consumers can be savvier at spotting them, which her pioneering research group ‘Fight the Fakes’ of King’s College London spreads awareness of.”
The John Glyn Society lectures, held throughout the year, are a key part of the Sixth Form experience, and intended to enrich the experience of those who have won academic scholarships to Colfe’s.
