Headmaster Congratulates Grade 9 GCSE Students
While the Year 12s are happily settling into life in the Sixth Form, Colfe’s managed one last celebration of the outstanding GCSE results from 2023. Headmaster Richard Russell hosted a special breaktime reception to congratulate six individual students on achieving straight 9s for all their GCSEs.
After two years of consistent study Amelie, Mirja, Anissa, Ned, Alex and Holly achieved the highest grade of 9 for every one of their subjects, amassing a total of 65 GCSEs between them.
A-level choices are varied for the group, covering English, Chemistry, Physics, French, German and Philosophy; every one of them is studying Maths A-level however, with Further Maths also chosen by several.
Plans for their post-school future are starting to take shape amongst the group as they consider their options for university, and the group chatted to the Headmaster over drinks and snacks about their ambitions and the possibilities open to them, with the fields of science, maths, law, sociology, engineering and philosophy all being considered. Mr Russell encouraged the group to aim high as they explore all the possibilities open to them.
Conversation turned to how the students had felt supported by the school during their GCSE courses and how they are finding their Colfe’s Sixth Form journey so far.
Mirja, studying Maths, Further Maths, German and English Literature A-level, said “It was really worth the two years of hard work to get these results. Considering the work we put in it meant a lot. I feel the teachers really understand how I work, which is really important.”
Having achieved 12 grade 9s, Alex is now studying Maths, English Literature, Chemistry and Philosophy at A-level. She said: “Of course the pace of schooling has changed from GCSE to A-level, but doing four A-levels is brilliant.”
Headmaster Richard Russell said: “The entire 2023 cohort worked extremely hard for this year’s GCSEs and the excellent grades that were achieved overall by the year group reflects that. This group students achieved particularly outstanding GCSE grades and I was delighted to host an informal meeting to congratulate them and hear how they are finding life in the Sixth Form and their aspirations beyond.”
The 2023 GCSE results were some of the highest ever achieved for the school against a backdrop of lower grades nationally and a return to the rigorous standards of 2019. 80% of grades awarded were 9-7, with 36% of grades a 9, the highest award possible.
