Getting to know our new Sixth Formers
Before they begin Year 12 in September, our new Sixth Form joiners were introduced to each other and to life at Colfe’s this week at an introductory event where they took part in a public-speaking activity, allowing them an opportunity to get to know each other before they begin Year 12 in September.
Year 13 Leaver Justin wrote about the day:
Our soon-to-be Year 12s spent the day at this ice-breaking event playing fun minigames and learning what it takes to be a great public speaker. After an exciting warm-up session to shake off the nerves, Caroline, our public-speaking specialist, taught the students key components of public speaking, including structure and body language. They then went off to individually write speeches about something important to them and delivered these speeches to each other and members of staff, including the Headmaster.
The topics spoken about ranged from the conflicts between religion and science to the regulation of steroids in sports. A captivating speech regarding the social struggles of second-generation immigrants was very educating to the crowd, and we also heard a warm-hearted speech about the experience of being a cadet. Another student delivered an inspiring speech about following his passion for aviation despite his shortcomings. Big congratulations go to Fred, who won the competition with a riveting speech on absurdism and the quest to find meaning in life. The competition was incredibly tough this year and a huge well done goes to all the students who participated, we look forward to seeing you again this September.
