The latest event in the Colfe’s Networking Series: brought together Sixth Formers, parents, alumni and friends of the school for an inspiring evening of Science and Medicine discussion and connection.

Held at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the event was led by a presentation by Dr Sonji Clarke, Consultant Obstetrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and an Old Colfeian.

Dr Clarke has a deep interest in, and significant experience with, complex social factors in obstetrics and gynaecology. Her presentation focussed on her work within the NHS to prevent deaths in pregnancy or childbirth – particularly among Black women, who are six times more likely to experience serious birth complications than their white counterparts. Dr Clarke shared her remarkable career journey from Colfe’s, where she was one of the first girls to join as the school became co-educational, culminating in her leading national work on preventing maternal deaths.

Dr Clarke’s powerful presentation was followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A, and culminating  with a networking reception that was attended by many pupils from Years 11-13, including a particularly significant number of girls themselves considering a medical pathway.

Headmaster Dan Gabriele said: “We were delighted to have welcomed Dr Clarke as our guest at this event. She spoke candidly about equity in health, including the fact that Black women in the UK are five times more likely to experience serious birth complications – a message that resonated deeply with our audience. The evening drew a particularly strong turnout from our aspiring female medics and scientists, a heartening sign of ambition and representation for the next generation.”
