Over the weekend, Colfe’s Electric Car Club took to the racing tracks for a thrilling day of Formula racing.

The two teams, comprised of enthusiastic Year 10 and 8 Students, were able to test their self-built race car “The Hawk” by competing against 16 other cars at Ford’s Dunton Test Track. Completing 30km in the 1½ hours of racing, Colfe’s finished in 5th place, beating 11 other schools.

Mr John Fishwick, Head of Physics and Electric Car Club, was enthralled by the results of the day and proud of the team’s result, saying: “Despite the intense heat and some initial technical issues, the teams performed excellently, with the “Hawk” car finishing in 5th position. Team managers Euan and Emily managed pit stops and strategy excellently, whilst all drivers completed some impressive lap times”.

The competition, organised by Greenpower Education Trust, uses the thrill of motorsport to help foster a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in young people.

Team member Emily (Year 10) said: “Electric Car Club has inspired me to take a further interest in STEM through connecting sports and science in a more enjoyable way”.

Ready and raring to race again next year, Colfe’s Electric Car Club is one to watch.
