Christmas at Colfe’s

After the youngest pupils’ heartwarming Nativity performance heralded the start of the festive season, the school’s Christmas celebrations have filled the school with cheer and goodwill.

The Winter Concert showcased the musical talent across the Senior school, featuring the string, wind and brass ensembles, jazz band, Upper School string quartet, Senior Orchestra, Singing and Signing club, Folk ensemble and Musical Theatre Club. The repertoire was suitably seasonal with something for everyone, from Shostakovich, Dvorak and Purcell to highlights from Harry Potter and You Can’t Stop the Beat from Hairspray.

Pupils from Years 3 and 4 delighted the audience in the senior hall with a polished and lively Jack and the Beanstalk. Based on the Roald Dahl version of the tale, the production had the trademark riotous Dahl twist on the traditional story, and the children gave it their all, with every song, dance and line performed with spirit, from Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling to a foot-stomping performance of Another One Bites the Dust. One parent said, “Amazing performances, got everyone into the Christmas spirit and the senior hall was rocking!”

Christmas Jumper Day saw the school ablaze with sparkle as pupils and staff getting into the Christmas spirit. The day is also a charity day designated to raise funds for Save the Children, and saw over £1500 raised.

The annual Carol Service took place in St Mary’s Church, Lewisham, featuring the customary Seven Lessons alongside congregational carols, performances from the Junior and Senior Chamber Choirs, the Folk Ensemble and readings by Senior school students .

Junior school pupils continued their celebrations throughout the week to the lead up to the end of term, enjoying ballet performances of the Magic Word and Alice in Wonderland, mince pies and carols in the playground, and even a sensational Santa Dash across the field cheered on by staff and parents.

Pupils in Year 8 meanwhile, enjoyed the special magic of northern European Christmas Markets on visits to the French towns of Arras and Lille, and the famous weihnachts markt of the picturesque German town of Aachen with its historic cathedral setting and famous printen gingerbread.
