Senior school Chamber Singers and Barbershop boys were privileged to enjoy a wonderful choral masterclass with acclaimed choral director and conductor Ralph Allwood at the Old Royal Naval College this week.

With decades of experience teaching young people to sing, Dr Ralph Allwood MBE is Director of the Rodolfus Choral Courses, co-founder of Inner Voices, a Supervisor for harmony at Queen’s College Cambridge, and Director of the only conservatoire chapel choir in the world, the Old Royal Naval College Trinity Laban Chapel Choir.

His class focused on liturgical singing, vocal technique, sight singing and ensemble skills, as well as speaking to the group about the history and context of Evensong services. Following the masterclass, the singers then joined the chapel choir for the Evensong service, singing Thomas Tallis’s O Nata Lux, Herbert Brewer’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis and Anton Bruckner’s Locus Iste.

Verity and Esha (Y10) said “We were very grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented choir and choral conductor in such a beautiful venue. It was exceptionally fun.”

Sebastian (Y10) said “The chapel was the most beautiful chapel I have ever seen and the atmosphere was phenomenal”.
