And The Results Are In: Douze Points All Round
Colfe’s was transformed into a riot of European song, music and celebration with its very own Eurovision Song Contest, with performances dazzling the audience in the packed Senior Hall.
As the official Eurovision takes place this weekend in Liverpool on behalf of last year’s winners Ukraine, the contest was held in solidarity. Guests were invited to make donations to Colfe’s Ukrainian Relief Fund, and over £1,000 was raised on the night.
The evening opened with a specially recorded surprise video message from the king of Eurovision himself, Graham Norton, to say bienvenue and congratulations to Colfe’s before handing over to the hosts for the evening, Amelia, Freddie and Myroslava.
The audience was ready to party Eurovision-style with plenty of suitably flamboyant flag-waving and national colours, and in return were treated to an incredible array of acts from pupils from Y8 to Y13, performing numbers from 15 European countries in their individual languages. Acts ranged from Belgium’s catchy pop classic 99 Luftballons and Austria’s punchy performance of Rock Me Amadeus, to Sweden’s performance of – what else – Abba’s Dancing Queen which had the whole audience on its feet. The acts even included a British Sign Language signed performance of Girl in Red’s We Fell in Love in October.
Defying the rule that there can only be one winner, in this case there were three: the Judges’ vote went to Louise (Y13) representing Germany with Uberall, by Celine, while the Audience vote was won by Year 12’s Isaac, Joshua, Eleanor, Samson and Daniel for their punchy performance of Rock me Amadeus for Austria.
The overall winner was announced with full Eurovision build-up and excitement as the Czech republic, represented by Amelie (Y10) and Elena (Y12) with their beautiful rendition of Tri Orisky pro Popelku.
Event organiser, Head judge and Modern Languages teacher Nathalie Saba said: “I can think of no better way to show support to our Ukrainian community or to celebrate the abundance of linguistic and musical talent within the school than this Eurovision extravaganza. Huge congratulations go to every single one of the pupils, it was truly amazing to see them perform in different languages with such confidence and passion.”
