Guidance on smartphone technology and pupil wellbeing

You will be aware of a national concern about the extent to which smartphone technology is impacting on children’s wellbeing and we believe it would be useful for parents – both prospective and current – to be aware of the position of the school on key aspects of this subject.

Use of mobile phones during the school day is prohibited, other than in the Sixth Form. Pupils can expect their phone to be confiscated if they are found to be using it during the school day and repeat offenders will receive an appropriate sanction. The introduction of Surface technology for all pupils in the senior school means that they  can make educational use of the internet on a device which is relatively safe because of our filtering and monitoring systems.

If parents are choosing a mobile phone for their child our firm recommendation is that it should be a traditional model through which they can make calls and send/receive text messages. Internet access, including access to social media, is not necessary. It is also very difficult to monitor online activity if it is conducted through a phone, as opposed to a home computer.

We will continue to do all that we can within school to promote responsible use of the internet and positive engagement in social media.

Smartphone permission is a choice for families to make for themselves. If you do choose to allow your child a smartphone we would emphasise most strongly the importance of identifying a reliable means of checking and, if necessary, controlling, the use to which the smartphone is put.
