General Information

  • Awards are made at the discretion of the School.
  • Scholarships are normally tenable until the end of Year 11 (or Year 13 in the case of Sixth Form scholarships), subject to satisfactory behaviour and academic commitment. It is exceptional, but not unprecedented, for an award to be withdrawn.
  • The number of award-holders varies from year to year. In a typical year group we would expect between 20 and 30% of pupils to benefit from some form of fee subsidy.

11+ (Year 7 entry)

For many years, Colfe’s has awarded scholarships to pupils entering the school at Year 7 who demonstrate exceptional ability and who will be net-contributors to the life of the school. In cases of proven financial need, scholarships may be supplemented by the award of a means-tested bursary.

Most scholarship funds are allocated in recognition of academic potential, as demonstrated in the January entrance examination. If a candidate comes across particularly strongly at interview, that will be taken into consideration as well. Academic Scholarships will not normally exceed 50% fee remission, although more frequently are awarded in the range of 10% to 30%.

The importance of the wider curriculum at Colfe’s is reflected in our policy of offering a limited number of scholarships in Music (minimum standard Grade 4), Sport, Drama and, for the first time this year, Art, all of which are crucial ingredients in the success of the school. The value of scholarships in Drama, Sport and Art will not normally exceed 20% fee remission. It is possible, in exceptional circumstances, for a Music Scholarship to be worth up to 50% fee remission.

Colfe's is a selective academic school. Prior to scholarships being awarded, results in the academic entrance exam will be considered, as well as performance in the individual schoalrship auditions and assessments. Pupils who gain awards must also demonstrate the potential to achieve in the top half of their year group.

13+ (Year 9 entry)

A limited number of academic scholarships are available for pupils joining Year 9, following assessment in the 13+ entry examinations.

16+ (Sixth Form entry)

A number of academic scholarships are available to pupils joining Colfe’s for the first time in the Lower Sixth Form. Such awards will be made following the Sixth Form scholarship examination in November and are conditional on an agreed performance at GCSE. Music, Drama and Sports awards may also be available at this stage. Scholarships may be offered to existing Year 11 pupils who perform particularly well at GCSE.
