News from the Sixth Form
Information For External Applicants – September 2009
Colfe’s Sixth Form is made up of approximately 200 students i.e. 100 in Year 12 (the Lower
Sixth) and 100 in Year 13 (the Upper Sixth). The majority of our current Year 11 students are
expected to continue into the Sixth Form; however, we do welcome applications for Year 12 from
external students. Those wishing to apply for a place for next September (2009) are advised to do
so before the end of November.
Entrance Criteria For External Applicants
The Sixth Form Scholarship exams will take place on Saturday, 17th January.
Candidates must be registered for entry well before this date and no later than the end of this
current term. The exam consists of elective papers in two subjects and a common general paper. The
required standard is high: funds are limited and it is unlikely that an applicant will be
successful if the student is not anticipating an A* or A grade at GCSE in the great majority of
his/her current subjects. Any candidate who is applying for a Bursary should enter for the
Scholarship exam. Bursary awards are effectively means-tested scholarships and can, in cases of
exceptional academic potential and proven financial need, cover the full cost of Sixth Form fees.
Limited funds are also made available for scholarships in sport, music and drama, with information
available from the relevant Heads of Department.
We do not expect everybody to apply for a scholarship. Independently of the Scholarship
procedure, candidates for Sixth Form places are considered as and when they apply throughout the
year. Following registration we will approach the student’s current school for an academic
reference which includes a request for predicted GCSE grades. The student will then be invited into
the school for an interview, following which a decision about his/her application will be made. If
we believe the student has the potential to meet the academic criteria for Sixth Form entry, we
will offer a conditional place for September. The conditions being that the student achieves at
least 14 points at GCSE, with an A* or A equating to 3 points, a B equating to 2 and a C equating
to 1 point. We also require the student to get A grades in at least four subjects, preferably in
the subjects that he/she wishes to study in the Sixth Form.
