The School condones neither the misuse of drugs, solvents, alcohol or tobacco, nor the illegal
supply of these substances. It defines abuse as ' the use and supply of alcohol, tobacco,
solvents or illegal drugs or actions under the influence of these agents at school, on a school
event, or in a situation where a pupil may be associated with or representing the school'.
Involvement in such activities is regarded as a very serious disciplinary offence that is likely to
result in temporary or permanent exclusion. Parents are always informed at an early stage in such
circumstances and the police and external counselling agencies may also be involved.
The drug policy operates within the school's programme of health
education. The School acknowledges its formative role in the development of young people and
endeavours to influence attitudes and behaviour through its ethos and everyday operation. Through
the taught curriculum we seek to equip pupils with an accurate and up-to-date understanding of the
implications and consequences of use and abuse of such substances as tobacco, alcohol, drugs and
solvents. The School Nurse and the School Counsellor are available to advise pupils on a
confidential basis as appropriate.
