ICT Acceptable use policy
Students at Colfe’s are responsible for good behaviour on the school network and Internet just
as they are in a classroom or a school corridor. The general school rules apply and normal
standards of decency, courtesy and responsible behaviour are expected on the network.
The computer system is owned by the school and is made available to students to further their
education. The school reserves the right to examine or delete any files that may be held on
its computer system or to monitor any Internet sites visited. Computer storage areas and
floppy disks will be treated like school lockers. Staff may review files and communications to
ensure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files stored
on servers or disks would always be private; in particular, users should know that automatic and
manual searches of email and user areas are routinely made. Users are responsible for the
contents of their own storage areas on the network and must therefore keep their passwords secret
at all times. Parental permission is required before students may use the
network. Individual users are at all times responsible for their behaviour and communications
made over the network.
The following actions are unacceptable and are not permitted:
- Use of the school network without permission from a member of staff
- Use of the school network when not being supervised by a member of staff
- Searching for, sending or displaying offensive or pornographic messages or pictures .
- Using obscene language
- Harassing, bullying, insulting or attacking others
- Damaging computers, computer systems or computer networks
- Violating copyright laws or attempting to claim credit for material downloaded from the
internet
- Using other people’s usernames or passwords
- Impersonating other people or using a false identity
- Trespassing in other people’s folders, work or files
- Wasting limited resources eg. by printing unnecessarily or by playing non-educational
games at any time
- Storing any material on the network that is not directly required for school work
- Downloading files other than text or pictures
directly required for school work
- Attempting to download and/or install software
- Attempting to use or gain access to software, services or other resources on the network other
than those explicitly allowed by the provision of an icon or link
- Attempting to use or gain access to remote systems to which public access is not permitted
- Attempting to circumvent any of the security, monitoring or other restrictions imposed on the
network users
- Using or accessing chat, email (other than mail.colfes.com), bulletin or message boards
- Disclosing personal information, such as home address, in email communications
- Buying goods or services over the Internet
Violations of the above rules will result in a temporary or permanent ban on network
use. Additional disciplinary action may also be taken in line with existing practice on
inappropriate language or behaviour. When applicable, police or other authorities may be
involved.
