Outdoor education
For over twenty years school pupils have enjoyed outdoor education
experiences during curriculum time. Currently all year 7 & 8 pupils attend residential weeks at
centres in the Lake District and North Wales.
Pupils gain a great deal from participation in the scheme and is part of the ethos of
developing the whole child. Pupils are guided through challenging activities which help to develop
their confidence in one another, themselves and staff. They also get the opportunity to stay in
some of the most spectacular scenery in the United Kingdom.
Pupils attend the courses in term time accompanied by their tutor and other school staff.
They take part in activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, expeditions involving overnight
camps, caving and mountain walking. All centres used are licensed by AALA – The Adventure
Activities Licensing Authority.
After years 7 and 8 pupils continue to be offered outdoor education
with opportunities to take part in a voluntary year 9 week to Scotland, overseas expeditions, the
Combined Cadet Force Squadron which also operates the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and the Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award in school. There are also opportunities for pupils to take outdoor education
options in their game periods such as Scuba, kayaking, sailing and climbing.
