Economic models are used extensively to make sense of
real world data, behaviour and events. The interaction of individuals (consumers and workers),
firms and governments is examined, and recent economic history (from Thatcherism of the 1980s
onwards) is reviewed. Quantitative methods skills required for the study of A level Economics or
Business Studies are below GCSE Mathematics standards. Coursework is a key component of both GCSE
Business Studies and A level Business Studies.
There is a thriving Economics and Business Society
which organises trips, competitions, meetings and guest speakers. We also take part in visits
further afield such as New York. The department is based in a modern and well-equipped suite of 4
rooms which includes a mini computer cluster and three rooms each with an interactive white board.
We have had great examination success in the recent past in terms of top A* GCSE, A level and
Oxbridge performances. All four members of department are experienced external examiners. ICT plays
a prominent role in all of our courses. The department maintains close links with local businesses,
the city and former pupils.
