At Colfe’s we have the facilities for pupils to work
in a wide range of materials, although a new emphasis on CAD/CAM technology has inspired the use of
smart materials and rapid prototyping techniques.
In the foundation years, pupils work through a variety
of design projects that introduce them to manufacturing processes in wood, metal and plastics. At
GCSE and Advanced Level, design projects remain central, but students investigate the properties of
materials and study design in its broadest context.
In 2007, projects included –
· an interactive bus stop for elderly people or the partially
sighted.
· a range of jewellery made from recycled products.
· a shoulder protector for a builder to make it possible to carry
heavy objects without injury.
· a device for quickly filling a set of water bottles for a rugby
team.
· an insert for student lockers to allow for better organisation and
storage.
· a waterproof case to protect a pump on a boat.
