Drama
Colfe’s has a thriving Drama department that involves pupils throughout the school
in curriculum and non-curriculum based projects. In the first three years all pupils follow a drama
course based on exploring social and physical awareness with an emphasis on promoting team-work,
confidence and communication skills. Pupils are encouraged to use their imagination and creative
abilities to express themselves through spoken language, movement and written work. Lower school
Drama is taught by Head of Drama, Gavin Bruce, together with Mr Walker, Ms Davies and Mrs J. Vander
Gucht. We currently follow the Edexcel GCSE and A Level Drama courses. Our major school production
takes place every December. In 2005 it was a highly successful production of Grease, which played
to packed houses for four nights having already been on a two week tour of South Africa. Last
December we staged the epic musical Les Miserables, which involved both our drama and music
students. During the spring term Year 10 and 11 pupils get the opportunity to take part in The
Schools’ Shakespeare Festival; this year we performed at the Broadway Theatre, Lewisham. In March
and May respectively the Sixth Form and GCSE Drama and Theatre Studies’ students perform their exam
pieces to public audiences. In recent years, A Level students have performed in productions such as
Equus, Blood Wedding, Blue Remembered Hills, Our Country’s Good and East. In the summer term over
100 Lower School pupils get the opportunity to take part in a Revue style production called Spring
Snippets. In addition to the productions, we also offer a number of extra curricular visits. At
least once a term STAGES offer discounted tickets to some of the best shows in London enabling
pupils, staff and parents the opportunity to see excellent theatre at a very reasonable cost. We
also run trips abroad during the October half term holiday for all those in Years 10 and above who
have an interest in Drama.
