An Old Colfeian, who is the Head Teacher of an English Speaking School in South America,
has given a fascinating insight into the opportunities for Gap Years abroad.
Alan Shanks, who left Colfe’s in 1979, is the Headteacher of the Colegio Anglo Colombiano in Bogota. His school is a member of the Round Square Consortium of schools of which Gordonstoun is part and so shares some of the ethos of this famous Scottish School. Head of Careers, Mrs Cardnell said “This is a fascinating opportunity for students to take a Gap Year in South America. Alan Shank’s school provides five month placements for up to six students to work as a paid Teaching Assistant with 9 to 11 year olds. “Taking a gap year before University can be life enhancing and it is important that the students think about the potential opportunities out there. “In this case, the chance to work in another country and potentially learn (or improve) Spanish, could be perfect for some of the students at Colfe’s. Accommodation would be provided free for them on a secure site and there are opportunities available to take trips into the Amazon rain forest as supervisors.
“I hope students will take time to think about opportunities to broaden their horizons and to try something a little different.”
