Colfe’s in the Community
Leisure Centre:
Colfe’s Leisure Centre
works extremely hard to accommodate the local community and to
encourage participation in healthy activities, also offering opportunities such as potential
employment within the leisure industry.
The Centre offers fantastic facilities and with space at a premium
within London, Colfe’s offers great opportunities for all. The facilities include a football pitch
sized astro-turf pitch, a 25 metre swimming pool, badminton and tennis. With these facilities at
hand there are opportunities for the local community to reap the rewards. The centre is open to the
public after school hours through extremely competitive
membership rates. This encourages the local community to take part in healthy
activities as well as socialising with others.
We offer opportunities for pupil’s at local schools to take part in
work experience at the leisure centre. In the two week period the pupils get a
real feel for the leisure industry and what it entails. They get a taste of working as a team in a
professional atmosphere, and take part in several of our classes to integrate with our members. The
Leisure centre also supports the local
Sea Cadets and Cubs allowing use of the centre to enjoy sport and to gain swimming
awards
.
The Leisure Centre has also been involved in offering the facilities
to several
local primary and secondary schools. Over the October half term several schools
used the swimming pool and sports hall. Over 230 children took part and absolutely loved the
weeks activities, learning how to swim and trying out unusual sports. Further dates have now been
added into next year.
Local schools are also offered to hold their
sports days in the summer at the school grounds. We have two arranged for July
2009.
A recent initiative to encourage ‘children whose weight is over the
healthy range’ to participate in physical activity has been introduced, with the
MEND programme. Our trainers use the swimming pool, pavilion and sports facilities
to present the 10 week programme. The initial programme has been a great success and further
programmes have now been booked.
Places are free to the children and parents are actively involved and also attend.Colfe’s Leisure centre have offered free sports courses to the successful children
completing the course.
The
Marie Curie
Swimathon is an event that has taken place for many years now and Colfe’s offers
it’s swimming pool for the event which takes place once a year. The Centre itself receives
significant donations through it’s members supporting our staff team each year and many
members participate too, with all proceeds going to the Marie Curie Cancer Trust.
