Youth crime never seems to be out of the news these days. In light of this we carried out a set of short interviews with the pupils of our school and found that many people feel intimidated and unsafe in the local area.
In the interview questions were asked such as ‘How safe do you feel in your area?’ and ‘
How do you think the government could improve on safety in the area?’ Many replied with negative
responses saying they do not feel safe in the area and that the government could improve a lot by
putting more police patrols on the streets. Oliver, aged 13, said: “Yes I do believe the government
could improve on the safety by enforcing harsher punishments for carrying a weapon and have more
police officers patrolling the area
Many students shared Oliver’s negative views, however a few held more positive views: “Yes I
do feel quite safe in my area because I know my surroundings quite well and there are a lot of
people around when I’m walking about”, said Sophie, aged 12. According to the answers that we
received more people don’t feel safe in the area and this is mainly due to people feeling
intimidated and suspicious of large groups of people.
