For the second year running Colfe’s is to represent Kent in the London and South-east Regional
netball tournament to compete for a place at Nationals.
On Wednesday the 14
th November, 60 schools from Kent travelled to Rainham to participate in the annual U16’s
Kent Netball tournament. The team was determined to come home with the trophy and be the first
girls in the school to win the Kent Tournament, beating the record set by the U19’s last year, who
came second.
Colfe’s stormed through the first round, in the process beating Kent College Pembury,
Highstead, Hayes, Darrick Wood and Langley and scoring a total of 54 goals and conceding just 12.
We then faced St. George’s. This was a good match with a tall opposition but a tactical move in the
attacking circle secured a win by 3 goals. In the quarter finals Colfe’s met Tonbridge. Again
another tough match but superb shooting from Emma Sullivan and Issy Timothy ensured victory. In the
semi finals the girls defeated Bexley Grammar 11-8 to win a place in the finals.
Having being knocked out of the tournament at the semi-final stage for the past two years,
Coach Nicci Rayes and Captain Ruth Storrs-Fox were determined that this time the team would lift
the trophy. A few words of inspiration and an almightly Colfe’s cheer saw the girls take to
the court confident and determined. The opposition (Simon Langton Girls School) were also keen to
win, and having won the toss and scored from their centre pass dominated the play for the first few
minutes of the game. However, three minutes into the game and 2 goals down, Grace Sowande made a
fantastic interception from Langton’s centre pass and we were back in the game. At half time it was
4-3 to Langton. The second half saw a composed Colfe’s side which featured Asteene Minto, Ruth
Storrs-Fox, Emma Sullivan and Issy Timothy assertive in attack and Charlotte Moorhouse, Mollie
Madden and Bethan Dixon dominating in defence. To our delight we scored 4 goals in a row to
put us in the lead by 7 goals to 5. However Langton were not going to give up easily and made an
interception mid-court which they converted to make the score 7-6. Langton had the next centre pass
and managed to pass the ball into their attacking, but before they had the opportunity to attempt
the shot the final whistle blew and Colfe’s were crowned champions. Final score 7-6 to Colfe’s
.
Coach Nicci Rayes has been delighted with the girls’ performance, attitude and determination. “
It has been a personal target of mine to win the Kent Tournament since joining Colfe’s and I am
delighted that the U16’s have achieved this. They are a delightful and talented team of individuals
who have worked hard very hard over the past few years. Ruth Storrs-Fox has motivated and
inspired her team since the start of the year and so far she is undefeated - long may it continue”
Coach and Captain would like to thank Sam Holder (former student and Captain of the U19 squad 2006)
for her inspiration and support during the tournament, Maureen Brown and the tournament organisers
for a great day!
Can you help? The team is now looking for kit sponsorship for the next stages of
the competition. Interested? Please contact
